Belize Districts and Major Marine Features
Belize has 6 districts, which are more or less the same thing as a county. They are, north to south, Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo. Sometimes the district name is synonymous with the name of the major city in that district. For example, if a Belizean says he is "going to Stann Creek", he means Dangriga.
The #1 marine destination in Belize is Ambergris Caye, which is the largest island in the country. Here you will find hundreds of hotels and lodges.
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Its 200-mile long coral wall protects the country from storms, and is the reason there is no surf in Belize except out past the Barrier Reef.
