The Best Places to Stay in

Places to Stay in Placencia Belize

Visitors reach remote Placencia in southern Belize by light aircraft or a leisurely drive down the four-mile-long peninsula. The tiny village of Placencia has some of the best beaches in the country, according to Rough Guides. The village is also known for Lobster-Fest, a celebration of food and music occurring each year in late June at the start of the lobster season; and close to the full moons in April and May, whale sharks draw divers to the waters off Placencia's coast.

Guesthouses

Guesthouses in Placencia are small, family-run premises in low-rise wooden buildings. Many guesthouses overlook the Caribbean Sea. Lydia's Guest House (lydiasguesthouse.com) is a budget, two-story property at the north end of the village. Four of the eight rooms have shared baths; guests share the common kitchen. Contrary to its name, the Blue Crab Resort (bluecrabbeach.com) is not a resort but a small hotel with four air-conditioned rooms and two cabanas. It offers guests the use of free bicycles, and complimentary snacks are provided on arrival. The hotel's restaurant serves breakfast each day, which is not included in the rate.

Resorts

Placencia resorts are located on the shore of the Caribbean Sea and offer guests more in the way of amenities and facilities than do guesthouses. Placencia resorts offer a wider range of accommodations, including cabanas, villas, suites and standard rooms. A villa at Captain Jak's resort (captainjaksbelize.com) has a full kitchen, two bathrooms and a deck. The resort features tropical gardens, a private dock, an outdoor grill for barbeques, terraces with hammocks, and a bar. The Penthouse Suite at the Laru Beya resort (larubeya.com) has a rooftop whirlpool tub with ocean views, a swimming pool, a restaurant and a bar.

Cabanas

Choose from rustic or fully equipped cabanas in Placencia. The one-room hardwood cabins at Garden Cabanas (gardencabanas.com) are fully equipped with kitchens, one queen- and one twin-size bed and private bathrooms. The cabanas are located on the beach for easy access to the warm waters. For a budget, rustic cabana with a ceiling fan and one double bed, but no kitchen, there's Julia's Cabanas (juliascabanas.com), one of several like it in Placencia village.

Beachfront Suites and Villas

For a more luxurious vacation, Placencia offers beachfront suites in a range of sizes and price ranges. Beachfront in Belize (beachfrontinbelize.com) has two beachfront suites with tile floors and air conditioning, as well as full kitchens with dining tables; the larger suite also has a couch. At the Casa Del Sol (casadelsolbelize.com) you can book the entire four-bedroom, two-kitchen villa or a villa suite. The beachfront villa comes with maid service and a private chef, plus patios, a barbeque area and an infinity swimming pool.
