Pelican Reef Villas Resort Belize/

We stayed at the Pelican Reef Villas Resort in Ambergris Caye, Belize, October 6-12, 2007, on the advice of some friends of ours who had stayed there before. Man, we are glad we did!

Belize is one of our favorite all-time vacation spots, and Ambergris Caye is the only spot we stay now.

It is the perfect blend of laid-back Belize (dirt roads, golf carts, open container laws, palapa bars on piers, open-air, beach-front cafes, care-free, island holiday attitude, sandy beaches, palm trees, and 80 degree water) with just enough development aimed at the travelers who can afford to treat themselves so they sleep in "just like home" luxury while spending their time out of bed dancing, bare-footed on the sand, at a completely casual, totally intoxicating island palapa bar.

It is the point of vacation to "get away from it all"; island living lets you do that just perfectly, thank you very much. But, the "special treat" of vacation - that truly makes it the perfect holiday - is when you spoil yourself with luxury accommodations while you are there.

Pelican Reef Villas Resort was the perfect spoiling part of our last trip to Belize.

It is not a sprawling 1, 000 room resort; it is an intimate 22-room luxury condo building centered around a beautiful stone, paved courtyard containing a gorgeous pool, complete with swim-up bar stools at the "Cave Bar". Steps away from the pool is the beach; steps down the beach is the private pier that stretches out hundreds of feet into the ocean. At the end of that pier is a way-to-cute palapa (we spent several late nights, wine bottles in tow, under that palapa, dangling our feet in the wonderfully warm ocean, taking turns watching the stars above us and the colorful fish swimming underneath us).

We arrived in Belize on Saturday, October 6th and flew the Tropic Air short "skip" flight out to Ambergris Caye (definitely take the 15 minute flight instead of the 90 minute boat taxi ride!). We picked up our rented golf cart (make sure you book one of these; it changes your whole vacation) and headed down the winding "main road" to Pelican Reef.

The town is in the process of turning its dirt roads (there are very few cars on Ambergris Caye; most people get around via golf carts) into stone paved roads. This was a nice surprise this trip. The "town center" is a very busy place - full of great bars, shops, and places to eat. It is where you party at night. It is also a little too loud to stay there and none of the luxury resorts are in town; they are all either north or south of town (for the space, private beachfront, and peace and quiet).

Pelican Reef is a short golf cart ride south of town.

We were fortunate to have been able to book one of the Penthouse condo. The Penthouses are two-story, three-bedroom luxury condos. They look straight out on the ocean (over the beautiful pool courtyard and sandy beach). They are completely - and beautifully - furnished (vaulted ceilings, Mahogany wood, granite, top grain leather, and expensive appliances). We absolutely felt we were getting our money's worth.

The master bedroom in the Penthouse is the whole top floor, complete with a wall-to-ceiling window looking out at the beach, a king-sized bed, a truly luxurious bathroom with a huge Jacuzzi tub and an even bigger shower. The downstairs has a state-of the-art kitchen, a beautifully furnished living room, and two more bedrooms (each with their own bathroom). There is a balcony off both the living room and off the main downstairs bedroom. There is even a washer and dryer in the unit.

Everything you need is included: linens, towels, kitchen appliances, dishes/silverware/utensils. There is even American cable television (there are 4 TV's in the unit, including in each bedroom).

From what we saw (we only saw a couple of other condos) all of the condos are three-bedroom, beautifully furnished places to stay - we would stay in any of them - but, we would highly recommend getting one of the Penthouse units if they are available.

[One note: one earlier review wisely pointed out that construction was underway on the new buildings when they were there. We can report that all construction was completely finished when we arrived.]
